Transport

As a student in New Zealand you can often save money on transport by using a student card. The best card to have is the ISIC card, available from your home country if you are a student there.

Towns and Cities

Auckland - Auckland is big and has a large bus system, buses come about every 30-45 minutes
Wellington - There is a good bus system and a small railway system, but you can easily walk around the downtown area.
Christchurch - This bus system is excellent and cheap.
Smaller towns - If you study in a smaller town, there is no problem with transport. You can probably ride a bicycle or walk!

National

Many students travel around New Zealand at the weekend or after they finish studying.

If you want to drive around New Zealand you should get an international driving license, available from the AA.

Bus		Car
There are 2 kinds of buses - 'City to city' buses are quite cheap, but you can only go to the towns, it's difficult to see the countryside. 'Tourist' buses go to the big cities and also tourist towns. They also help to book activities and accommodation. Try 'Kiwi Experience' or 'Magic bus' companies.		If you want to explore New Zealand, the car is the best way. You can rent a car from around $35 a day, or you can buy one. A good site for finding prices of rental cars is Rental Cars New Zealand. There are lots of places to buy a car, for example; Backpackers - check the noticeboard in the hostel. Buy Back - a dealer who will guarantee to buy your car back when you leave NZ. Car Fairs - in cities there are fairs at the weekend - check the newspaper.

Train		Plane
There are 2 good trips; Christchurch to Picton Christchurch to the West Coast. These trips are very beautiful but not frequent, only 1 or 2 trains per day.		If you want to get from one town to another quickly then plane is best way. Always ask for student discounts (use your ISIC card) and book in advance.
